Long-term status

Permanent residence pathways

Permanent residence is an indefinite immigration status, but the physical card may still expire. Some countries grant PR directly through family or skilled-worker routes; others require several years of temporary residence first.

The records below separate direct PR from temporary residence, renewal, and citizenship. Each page identifies the competent authority, eligibility basis, continuity rules, family treatment, and current primary sources.

Status validity is not card validity

A ten-year card does not necessarily mean the underlying status lasts only ten years, and an indefinite status can still be lost through long absence or failure to maintain its legal basis. Always verify both rules.

Questions, answered

Frequently asked questions

What does permanent residence mean?

It generally means an indefinite right to live in a country, subject to cancellation and absence rules. The physical card may still expire and require renewal.

Is permanent residence the same as citizenship?

No. Permanent residents generally remain citizens of another country and may lack voting, public-office, consular and unconditional return rights that citizens hold.

Can I receive permanent residence immediately?

Some family, skilled or investment categories grant PR directly; others require years of qualifying temporary residence. The route record labels the legal outcome rather than using PR as a marketing synonym.

Can PR be lost through absence?

Yes. Many countries impose residency obligations or abandonment tests. A card's expiry date is not the same as the maximum permitted absence.

Does permanent residence cover my family?

Often close relatives can apply, but each person must meet the applicable relationship, dependency, medical, character and documentation requirements.

Can permanent residents work?

Most PR statuses include broad work rights, but regulated professions, public roles and local registration can still require separate approval.

Does PR automatically become citizenship?

No. Naturalisation requires a separate application and normally adds presence, language, character, tax and integration conditions.

Do years as a temporary resident count toward PR?

Sometimes all years count, sometimes only specified permits or a fraction of time counts, and absences can interrupt continuity. Use the rule for the precise permit category.

What is the difference between status validity and card validity?

The underlying status may be indefinite while the identity document expires periodically. Renewing the card proves continuing status; it does not necessarily recreate the status.

What evidence is usually required for PR?

Typical evidence includes identity, current status, qualifying residence or relationship, physical presence, tax or social records, accommodation, language and criminal-record documents, depending on the route.
